Edward Gorey (1925-2000)

An iconic American author, illustrator, and designer celebrated for his macabre humor and distinctive pen-and-ink Gothic drawing style. Though his work features Victorian and Edwardian aesthetics, he spent most of his life working in New York City and Cape Cod. Gorey was a notable eccentric who attended the New York City Ballet almost every night for 30 years and famously wore floor-length fur coats with basketball sneakers. He was a passionate advocate for animal welfare. Upon his death, his Cape Cod residence, known as the Elephant House, was converted into The Edward Gorey House, a museum operating to support animal rights and literacy programs.
